Wood carving is a kind of sculpture, often called "folk craft" in our country. Wood carving can be divided into three categories: three-dimensional round carving, root carving and relief carving. Wood carving is a kind of work separated from carpentry, which is classified as "fine carpentry" in our country.
Folk art varieties categorized by carving materials. Generally, we use trees with fine and tough texture, which are not easy to deform, such as nanmu, zitan, camphor, cypress, ginkgo, incense, redwood, longan, etc. We use natural forms of tree roots for carving.
The natural form of the roots of the tree carving artwork is "root carving".
Wood carving in the round, relief, openwork or several techniques and use. Some are also painted to protect and beautify the wood.
On June 7, 2008, wood carving was approved by the State Council to be included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
On May 23, 2011, Putian City, Fujian Province, declared wood carving (Putian wood carving) approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China included in the third batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
According to the National Arts and Crafts Industry Public Service Platform, traditional Chinese wood carvings are made of a wide range of materials and rich in carving themes. According to different materials can be divided into mahogany carving, white wood carving, boxwood carving and longan wood carving.
